The History of Actos Lawsuits

By the year 2008, Actos was the 10th most prescribed drug and it made over $4 billion in profits for Takeda. By 2010 more than 2 million people received prescriptions for Actos. It was then that the first lawsuit was filed against Takeda, under the False Claims Act. Other lawsuits followed over the next year or two. Studies were done after that that showed a direct link between the drug and heart attacks as well as bladder cancer.

The first trials began in California in 2013 and the first verdict was awarded that same year. Jack Cooper received an award for $6.5 million. This verdict was overturned, and then after that, it was re-instated. After that bellwether trials started in 2014. $9 billion was awarded to be split among over 9,000 victims of the drug. It was the seventh-largest award in US History. This award was reduced in October of that year.
